With a new generation of luxury buyers now in their 20s, Honda's Acura division is taking aim with a new entry-level sedan that it hopes will introduce them to the brand -- and keep them.

Acura unveiled the ILX concept at the North American International Auto Show in advance of the production version next spring. It will include Acura's first hybrid car.
"First-time luxury buyers place the highest value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues -- and that's a virtual definition of what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. Honda has tried to "position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."
Because younger buyers are often technology nerds, Acura is giving ILX features such as text messaging from the car and a Pandora Internet radio interface.
The entry-level model will be powered by a 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine. There will be a high-performance model with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. And then there will be a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, Acura's first-ever hybrid offering.
The ILX will be made in Greensburg, Ind.

Acura to Debut Three New Vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show

Acura announced today that it will unveil three all-new vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show including an all-new compact sports sedan, a redesigned RDX crossover sport utility vehicle, and a concept version of the next generation Acura NSX super car.
The Acura ILX Concept is a styling study of an all-new luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in spring 2012. To be positioned at the gateway to the Acura lineup, the ILX will feature three powertrains including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid. Acura also will unveil a prototype of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura's five-passenger SUV. Finally, Acura will debut the NSX Concept, which represents the styling direction for the next generation of Acura's super sports car.
"Acura has a steady cadence of exciting new models coming to market and it will all begin in Detroit," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura sales and service. "From the all-new Acura ILX at the gateway of the lineup to the pinnacle of performance with the Acura NSX Concept, Acura vehicles are being created for luxury customers who aspire to the highest levels of quality and value, with beautiful styling and the right balance of technology, performance and environmental responsibility."

The NSX Concept in January Rumors

It’s no secret that Honda would like to have a halo car in its lineup, similar to what the brand used to offer with the Acura NSX sport coupe. In fact, Honda had even begun developing such a car until global economic woes forced it to shelve the HSV-010, except in Japanese Super GT competition.

Times have changed, and Honda wants to be seen as a green automaker these days. Building a modern NSX doesn’t necessarily make sense for them, unless it’s a more environmentally-friendly, performance-oriented hybrid. Rumors of such a hybrid NSX have been stirred up in recent months, thanks to comments from Honda's CEO, Takanobu Ito.

If Britain’s Autocar is correct, we’ll see the forerunner of what may become the next Honda / Acura NSX at January’s Detroit Auto Show. Dubbed the Super Sports Concept, the car follows the Small Sports EV Concept that will be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show.

There are no details on engines or layout of the Super Sports Concept, but a hybrid drivetrain that combines both electric motors and a gasoline engine (like the AWD setup of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid) would allow maximum performance with reduced fuel consumption. It would also give Honda a chance to demonstrate that it can still innovate when it comes to both performance and fuel economy.

While the Small Sports EV is expected to reach showrooms (in Japan, at least) by 2013, we’re still awaiting official word from Honda about an NSX successor. If it breaks cover at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, we’ll be sure to cover it.

Is Tony Stark's new Acura a precursor to the next NSX?

When the upcoming Marvel reunion The Avengers hits the silver screen, it promises to be packed with action. Action heros like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America... and a new Acura NSX.

Wait, what? That's right: if the latest rumors from Auto Express prove true, that mystery Acura supercar that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) has been spied driving on the set of the upcoming superhero flick will be our first glimpse at the new supercar from Honda's premium marque.

The neo-NSX will reportedly pack the through-the-road all-wheel-drive hybrid drivetrain from the 2001 Honda Dual Note concept, encompassing a 3.5 to 3.7-liter V6 driving the rear wheels and an electric hub motor in each of the front wheels.

Tipped to be priced to take on the Nissan GT-R, the new NSX could be the Honda supercar we've been waiting for. For its part, Honda officials continue to deny that Tony Stark's car is representative of a new NSX, so we'll believe it when we see it (and we don't just mean at the movies).

SUVs and crossovers have replaced wagons as the most popular people and cargo haulers.
That's too bad because the few wagons that remain are pretty spectacular, and the Acura TSX Wagon is among the brightest stars.

The Acura is a sporty-looking, luxury wagon with a near perfect blend of power, comfort and cargo room. It handles like a sedan, rides like a sedan and is an absolute pleasure to drive. As if that's not enough, the TSX gets decent gas mileage, too.

The TSX wagon is long, low and lean with crisp styling that gives it a sporty sedan profile and carlike nose and tail.

Power is good with Honda's 2.4-liter, iV-TEC I4 engine creating 201 horsepower. That's coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission with SportShift, which allows you to shift manually, if you prefer. I did occasionally, but the 5-speed is so smooth that it handles the engine's power well during normal city driving.
TSX is quick to highway speeds, and while you'll hear a bit of engine noise in the lower gears, it calms down quickly after third gear.

TSX rides on a 106.5-inch wheelbase and weighs 3,623 pounds. The car feels nimble and responsive. Handling is smooth and fluid with good steering feedback from the power-assisted unit, which delivers a near ideal wheel feel.

Ride is well controlled with excellent suspension damping so you feel in tune with the road, but never more than a moderate bump to passengers, even on poor roads. TSX features four-wheel independent suspension with a multi-link setup in back and it works well.

Braking is first rate from four-wheel discs, ABS and a stability control system. Inside, TSX is one of the most comfortable cars and best laid out interiors I've seen all year.

The test car, which was the Tech model featuring a full navigation system with voice recognition and a rearview camera, featured black leather seats with a matte gray trim, including the rings around the gauges.
Acura's seats are mildly contoured with a soft leather feel, and firm cushions. Front seats are powered and the driver's seat has two memory settings. The Acura has two-speed seat heaters.

Leg and headroom are substantial front and rear and the wagon easily carries four adults. A fifth could sit in the middle, but the bottom seat cushion is less comfortable. Being a wagon, there is a plenty of room behind the rear seat for gear, or if you need to carry long items, the rear seats split and fold flat quick and easily. There's also an extendible cargo cover in back, and a power rear tailgate/hatch with an inside release.
Gauges are simple and the car's dash layout is extremely logical. All buttons, and there are quite a few, are big, so you can both see and use them. TSX also has a tilt/telescope steering wheel with cruise and radio controls on the hub. The trip computer is accessed via larger buttons on the lower part of the hub.
Unlike many cars, the TSX's navigation screen is not touch-screen and is located high on the dash, up near the windshield. That makes for easier viewing while driving, plus there is voice recognition for the system.
Climate controls, like the radio and navigation, are big and simple to use, including a toggle for the dual temperature controls.

Because this was the Tech model, the starting price was $34,610 and after delivery hit $35,495.
A base TSX wagon starts at $30,960. Gas mileage was good, and it was at 26.2 mpg during my drive, a fairly even mix of city and highway driving. The EPA rates this at 22 mpg city and 30 highway. SUVs and minivans rarely average more than 20 mpg.

NSX Will Live On

HENDRICK ACURA - Honda’s NSX successor may yet live, as Honda CEO Takanobu Ito announced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show that the Japanese automaker is beginning work on a new sports car. Instead of focusing on outright speed and power, Ito instead says he intends to build a car around power-to-weight ratio – which will be dramatic, according to Autocar.

Though the original NSX, sold under the Acura brand in the U.S., was powerful in its day, Ito says that his favorite part of developing that car was the work he did specifically with the aluminum body. “I really enjoyed that experience, and learned so much, so it is my wish that Honda engineers have the experience of developing a sports car like the NSX in [the] future,” Ito said in a press conference. “Within Honda, our engineers are already looking at developing such a car.”

Though Ito wouldn’t comment on when this future sports car would make it to production, he did emphasize that it would be a philosophically different car from the NSX, a mid-engine two-seater that weighed just under 3000 lbs. and boasted 290 hp by the end of its production run.

“You can’t depend on a high power output to call a car sporty anymore,” Ito said. “The original NSX was about high power but also good driving performance, and today power-to-weight is what we have to focus on.”

Honda originally planned to launch an NSX successor by 2010, but those ambitions were cut short in 2008 by former CEO Takeo Fukui, who cited the global economic crisis and the increasingly progressive environmental position of Honda as reasons for killing development of the new performance car.
Ito is all for building a new sports car, as long as it can uphold Honda’s eco-friendly image. “…When we develop our new sports car, we don’t want to copy Ferrari for power, but to also chase efficiency as well,” he said.

Though the blending of efficiency and sportiness has produced mixed results for Honda, like the lukewarm response garnered by its CR-Z hybrid hatchback, Ito continued, “Our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case…we will address that impression with our new generation of cars.”

Acura Rumormill Update

Acura is working hard to revamp its existing lineup, and the first phase is underway thanks to some updated sheetmetal. Next year, Acura's main focus will be to increase the fuel efficiency of its portfolio, and this will be accomplished by the addition of hybrid powertrains for certain models. According to Automotive News, the TL, RDX and MDX are all slated to get a gas-electric option.

In addition to the hybrid automobiles, Acura is looking to revive both the RSX and NSX nameplates. The RSX will be offered as a sedan for the 2013 model year, and then a coupe starting in 2015. We won't get excited for the NSX just yet (its on-again/off-again reports have left us a bit cold), but rumor has it that we could see the Acura sports car by 2014. Fingers, toes, arms and legs are all crossed for that one.

The Acura TL is an excellent car, and duly impressed my family when I chauffeured them to a Father's Day dinner. The TL manages to blend impeccable comfort with enthusiastic performance. One moment, the TL is a subdued large sedan with a comfy ride, gentle transmission shifts, and slick styling. The next it's a snarling sports sedan, with prodigious acceleration from its V-6, tight steering, and a transmission that's eager to jump between ratios.

TLs equipped with the Technology Package have an ELS/Panasonic 440-watt, ten-speaker surround-sound system. It was developed with input from sound engineer Elliot Scheiner, who's won six Grammy awards. I have won zero Grammys, but I think the ELS system is one of the best car-audio setups I've ever heard. From the deep bass of Tiesto, to the crisp vocals of Lauryn Hill, to string arrangements by Mark Ronson, every track I played from my iPod sounded fantastic.

The TL is not as athletic as some of its competition (the Volvo S60 and the BMW 3 Series immediately come to mind), so the automatic seems more appropriate. This is really a car for those looking for a sporty sedan, not a true sports sedan.

Compared to the old five-speed automatic, the new six-speed makes the most of the TL's great 3.7-liter V-6. It provides smoother shifts, slightly better fuel economy, and a better arrangement of ratios that help keep the engine within its power band. Along with the more-refined schnoz, it competes the package to make the TL the luxury sedan Acura has wanted it to be. In many ways, it is a more sporting alternative to the Lexus ES350, which is one of that brand's top sellers.

CHARLOTTE - Recently, Hendrick Acura won it's 5th Precision Team Dealership Award in a row and we were all treated to a dinner at the Hendrick Motorsports Complex by Mr.Hendrick himself. We were given a private tour of the Hendrick Heritage Museum, as well as access to the Motorsports Museum, where we were able to view some amazing race cars from the past and present. It was a fun filled evening and everybody here at Hendrick Acura was extremely grateful to Mr.Hendrick for his hospitality and for opening the doors to his museums for us to enjoy!
